Drop D drops the thickest string to D, extending your low range by two semitones and putting a low D under your fingers for heavy riffs and root-driven lines. The A, D and G strings are unchanged, so most of your fingering stays the same — only patterns that use the lowest string move.
Low to high: D A D G — standard bass with the low E dropped to D.
From standard E A D G, lower the thickest (E) string until it reads D, an octave below your D string. The other three stay the same.
