The notes (low to high)

D1 · A1 · D2 · G2. Drop D bass is standard tuning (E A D G) with only the lowest string lowered a whole step, from E down to D — so it sounds the same note as your D string, one octave lower.

What is Drop D bass tuning?

Drop D drops the thickest string to D, extending your low range by two semitones and putting a low D under your fingers for heavy riffs and root-driven lines. The A, D and G strings are unchanged, so most of your fingering stays the same — only patterns that use the lowest string move.

How to tune to Drop D on bass

  1. Open the Drop D bass tuner and allow microphone access.
  2. Play your lowest string and slowly loosen it; watch the needle move from E toward D.
  3. Stop when it reads D and turns green (within ±5 cents). Tip: it should match your open D string an octave lower.
  4. Check the A, D and G strings are still in tune.
